[ART] The Far End (HBP H/Hr, background Rm/Tk, Rn/Lu)
The DH covers have me excited.

The OotP movie stills have me excited.

The fact that alchemy is on the UK children's cover has me really excited. After all, which ship in fandom has been most prolific with intelligent, fascinating, enlightening, and, best of all, evidence-filled essays on literary alchemy?

To be honest, I never cared for alchemy prior to Deathly Hallows. I admired it, but I generally prefer canon, character development, psychological analyses, and the principles that govern healthy relationships, as opposed to the seven-stage alchemical journey. But after reading a few Harmonian essays on the subject, supported by the glaring incongruity that is HBP, I do see the benefits of the alchemical viewpoint, especially in terms of understanding the plot and the necessity of craptastic!HBP.

I still strongly disagree with how the characters were portrayed in HBP from a development standpoint; almost none of the characters' behavior in HBP makes sense with respect to the first five books. I will concede, however, that HBP makes perfect sense from the alchemical perspective. Despite the author's claims to the contrary, plot simply takes precedence over character.

So kudos to the Harmonian alchemy theorists, particularly those who came out with their analyses years ago, even before HBP. I have a sneaking suspicion that their work will be validated when July rolls around.

Ah, H.M.S. Harmony, how I still adore this ship and its crew and its ability to weather storms. :D

Thus, I was inspired to sketch...

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Chapter 29: The Phoenix Lament

Ron, Hermione, Luna, Tonks, and Lupin were gathered around another bed near the far end of the ward. At the sound of the doors opening, they all looked up. Hermione ran to Harry and hugged him; Lupin moved forward too, looking anxious.

"Are you all right, Harry?"

"I'm fine.... How's Bill?"

Nobody answered. Harry looked over Hermione's shoulder and saw an unrecognizable face lying on Bill's pillow...

-------

A few noteworthy things about the first three pages of this chapter:

1) Trophy Girlfriend offers not a shred of comfort to Harry. She leads him by the hand to the hospital wing, and that's the extent of their interaction. She's like a bellboy at a hotel, except she doesn't make conversation and doesn't even wait for a tip.

WTF, Robot Fangirl #446D. WTF.

2) Hermione runs from the far end of the ward to hug Harry as soon as he steps inside. Hmm... I might as well have bolded the entire sentence.

See, Jenny Sue? Take notes! That is the instinctive reaction of someone who actually cares about Harry deeply. Now I suggest you and your fiery hair go dance down a sunlit brick road to find another wizard who can give you a heart and a personality beyond Potter Fangirl #446D.

3) Hermione and Harry remain in an embrace long enough for Harry to have a verbal exchange with Lupin (and it is Lupin he has the exchange with, not Hermione), a few moments of silence, and finally a look over Hermione's shoulder.

WTF, Harry "Legally Blind" Potter. WTF.

Point #3 actually made me snicker as I read that scene in HBP. It's not necessarily romantic, given the surrounding tragedy, but it's mind-boggling how the depths of Hermione's concern escape Harry's notice. Rowling's writing is deliberately subtle in this scene, and a reader could completely miss or even dismiss what's happening.

This subtlety accomplishes two things. Its first objective is to hide the fact that the H/Hr hug actually lasts quite a while longer than necessary, exactly like Hermione's over-enthusiastic greeting at Grimmauld Place in OotP. Its second objective is to show how utterly clueless Harry really is when it comes to Hermione. Evidence for Harry and Hermione's feelings exists right there on the page, but Harry just doesn't pay attention.

And like Jane Austen's Emma, this oversight (undersight?) will come back later to kick Harry's sorry behind. Harry has severe myopia regarding many issues, but nowhere is his cluelessness more facepalm-inducing than where it concerns Hermione and her relationship to him. It's pathetic, but as the plot warrants Harry's obliviousness... *shrug*

He's doomed to stay blind for now.

Oh well. DH should redeem the boy. ;)

As with my previous sketch, a larger version of the image is available on Harmony Forever. I apologize for the roughness, as my tablet remains quite dead. :(

So please don't ask me about coloring the sketch. There's already a line of rough drawings clamoring for my attention...

Oh I know. This moment in HBP was the clincher to my Ginny!dislike and it's one thing I can't get over when it comes to H/G as a possibility. Even at the end of GoF (if we buy the story that JKR's been building up to OBHWF since Book 1), when Harry's just survived the worst night of his life so far and seen unspeakable things, I was amazed that there is absolutely no mention of Ginny-Sue whatsoever. We know that Hermione is pale and has been crying and just barely manages to keep herself from flinging herself on Harry when he walks in the Infirmary but Ginny-- nowhere. For the girl who's supposedly loved him for years, she's remarkably indifferent to Harry's near-death experiences.

I don't think it's Harry's fault for being clueless so much as it's JKR's fault for writing him idiotically. But then, in HBP, she wrote EVERYONE idiotically! The only character who came off decently in the character-massacre that was HBP is, perhaps, McGonagall.

As for DH, my opinion of JKR is low enough that I'm dreading July 21 like the apocalypse.

Oh, but what if - say, the Alchemists are right, or JKR has half a brain :-) - it turns out to be H/Hr after all! I'm looking forward so much to seeing the H/G fangirl meltdown!! :-)

Holy crap, you have no idea how happy I am to see a new sketch from you. My clicking when I saw your link on the harryhermione LJ was rather embarassing and frantic.

This is absolutely lovely and you picked the perfect scene. It's amazing how often this is overlooked or ignored by a certain segment of fandom, but this was a really powerful moment in the book. Maybe it's easier for them to skim through the scene when it's only words on a page, but once you see what's taking place in an image like this, the nature of what's happening becomes so much clearer.

Besides the content, you're a terrific artist and the effort you put into the background and secondary characters really brings everything to life. The whole story of the scene is being told in a single picture, context and all.

Anyway, great job and I want to say again how happy I am you're making new artwork!

#2 - *nods* I'm a believer in canon, first and foremost, and in spite of a certain interview with an author who most likely did not reveal the ending to her books to a couple of starstruck, brown-nosing fans, there are still standout pro-Harmony scenes in HBP! I hope to illustrate more in the future. :)

I'm so happy you drew another one!

I love the way you add to the characterization of everyone by their clothing. While I may never see Harry and Hermione quite the way you do, you have their distinct personalities captured. I especially love your Lupin, and Tonk's clothes in general.

My only quibble is that Ginny looks freakishly skinny- she's as wide as Tonk's sleeve.

Thanks for this drawing of that scene. It puts in plain sight what JKR subtly tried to hide.
About the robot fan, I wonder why JKR made Jenny so controlled of her emotions. After all, she's a Weasley and we know how they handle those. In OoTP, when Arthur was attacked, Ginny was shown with a normal reaction to such news, even in HBP she was shown very emotional in the scene in which the Chest Monster's was born. I honestly don't understand how JKR could write Ginny being so cold in this end scene... unless she's finally putting an end to the ship.

Keep them coming, please! :)

It puts in plain sight what JKR subtly tried to hide.

Rowling thinks she's so subtle, does she? MWAHAHAHA!!! I'll drag all those scenes out into the open by drawing them! Oh, wait... Just kidding. I don't have that much free time. :P

But yeah, like the OotP Post-Kiss Scene and the OotP Good Luck Kiss Scene, this was another one of those Harmony moments wrapped carefully in red herrings and hidden by the nuances of the English language.

Which makes it all the more fun to unwrap. *evil grin*

I honestly don't understand how JKR could write Ginny being so cold in this end scene... unless she's finally putting an end to the ship.

Slight correction here, if you don't mind. Rowling did put an end to the ChestMonster/Fangirl ship! In the most horrifying break-up scene this side of Spider-man! But I don't blame you if you've blocked that scene from your memory because it truly was craptastic. ;)

Thanks for the feedback! I know Hermione's hair is supposed to be bushy, but (as I've mentioned in previous art posts) the characters are based a lot on their movie counterparts. That's why Hermione's hair looks more wavy/curly than bushy.

Also, check out the UK children's cover of DH. That's pretty much how I envision Hermione's hair (although it's a tad messier on the cover).

Fantastic analysis, btw-- the H/G contingent have never been able to explain it.

Short of "Jo says so!", they don't have much in canon to support their ship anyway. Do you really expect to see an explanation for Harry/Snotty that doesn't veer into the realm of off-page speculation and JKR mind reading? :P
