[ART] On the Run (H/Hr, The DoM Six)
I bring more art, Harmony-style! Of course, I must warn you that it comes with yet another lengthy discussion of the scene in canon that inspired it.

This particular sketch isn't really detailed like my previous sketches, as I was too tired to fill in the background. Plus, I wanted to focus primarily on the characters in one of my favorite OotP scenes.

On a technical note, the scanner I used wasn't big enough to capture the whole page, so I had to scan two different sections of the sketch and combine the resulting images. I hope the merge turned out ok.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Chapter 35: Beyond the Veil

"RUN!" Harry yelled, and as the shelves swayed precariously and more glass spheres began to pour from above, he seized a handful of Hermione's robes and dragged her forward, one arm over his head as chunks of shelf and shards of glass thundered down upon them.

-------

As chaos erupts, Harry seizes a handful of Hermione's robes and drags her forward, using only one arm to cover himself. It would have made more sense for Harry to run and cover his own head with both arms, because not only would he be able to run faster; he'd be better insulated from the falling debris.

Obviously, that's not what Rowling wrote.

Here I want to highlight Harry's protective reaction towards Hermione. From an objective standpoint, Harry's protectiveness of Hermione does not make sense because she is the most competent fighter of the group, next to Harry. Moreover, a few seconds ago, the Death Eaters were threatening Ginny, not Hermione. All the kids moved to surround Weasel Girl to shield her, so if nothing else, Harry's protectiveness should have been directed towards Tag-Along Weasley instead of Hermione.

There's no logical basis for Harry wanting to protect Hermione. His reaction isn't based on rational thought at all--Harry is acting on instinct.

In a crisis, people instinctively protect what's most important to them. For example, in a fire, a mother will leap through smoke and flames to rescue her baby. The mother won't care that her hair is singed and her arms are suffering from burns, so long as she gets her baby out of danger. Likewise, in any perceived threat to her ego, image, or delicate sensibilities, Jenny Sue will use any combination of insults, attitude, hex (she knows only one), and physical violence to save herself. Jenny won't care that she's being a mean-spirited b*tch, so long as she gets her way.

Now keep in mind that Rowling writes her books with great care and attention to detail. It's easy to see, then, just how important Hermione is to Harry based on his actions at the Department of Mysteries. During their attempt to escape from the Death Eaters, Harry grabs Hermione and drags her forward with him. He doesn't care about the fact that holding on to Hermione while running would slow both of them down and leave him more vulnerable to falling shelves and shards of glass so long as she is safe with him.

It's nice how Harry's behavior here complements the established pattern of Hermione grabbing on to Harry. ;)

Of course, there's another angle from which we can view this scene: Ron. Let's explore how Rowling portrays Ron in the same situation. In the DoM, when faced with a group of merciless evildoers, does Ron show any sign that he cares about Hermione's well-being? Does he act in any way to protect his supposedly twu wuv?

No, on both counts.

In fact, after Harry grabs Hermione and starts to flee, he sees Ron sprinting ahead without a backward glance.

*points at sketch*

I rest my case.

Who needs ambiguous JKR quotes, when canon gives you clarity, depth, and consistency?

As always, the higher resolution image is in the fanart section of Harmony Forever. Please check that version out for a better view, since the resized Photobucket image shrinks the file too much for my liking. :/

Bonus Art:

Here's a sneak peek of another work-in-progress. I'm posting this because I have no idea when I'll finish it, if at all, and I figured that, by putting it on LJ, I'd feel more obligated to complete it in a timely fashion. XD

Harry's skin isn't anywhere near done, though his hair is more than 90% finished. I'll get to the rest of it eventually...

Cheers!

ETA: The image is now high resolution, and I didn't even do anything. Photobucket is weird.

ETA 2: Because [info]madderbrad insisted..

Ooooh, I'm LOVIN' this! :D

Wonderfully done, babe! ^-^ This is def. one of my favorite OotP scenes, as well! Like you said, we learn SO MUCH, simply from Harry's actions alone. And even in moments before and after the instinctive arm-grabbing by Harry, we see that his attention is, though unconscious, constantly focused on Hermione the whole time they're in the DoM. Although, I also like to think his instinct to keep her close isn't only to keep her safe, but also because he NEEDS her with him, and to me, that emphasizes the fact of how much he trusts her and relys on her guidance and/or assistance in ANY situation, really.

Lolz. I'm not even sure if that last part made any sense! SORRY, it's late! ;P

Anywho, I always enjoy AND appreciate your lol-tastic commentaries in addition to your lovely art. *G*

Don't worry--I understand what you're saying. :D The need to keep her safe prompts the question of why he needs to keep her safe, especially above Ron, Neville, Luna, and Ginny, and it boils down to the fact that Harry needs Hermione badly. And this isn't just me quoting Rowling, either. :P

Anywho, I always enjoy AND appreciate your lol-tastic commentaries in addition to your lovely art. *G*

Thanks. It's enjoyable to break down canon for a little bit. Even though it's such a small scene, it really speaks volumes.

Plus, I can never resist the opportunity to contrast the Jenny characterized by the interview vs. the actual Jenny in the books.

Beautifully done. The expressions on their faces, that iron grip Harry has on Hermione, Neville glancing backward...great details in what seems a simple piece at first.

And the unfinished one looks fantastic as well.

As I said in a reply to [info]kittehkat, I liked sketching Neville, and I thought him glancing backward, while everyone else ran forward, somehow makes sense to me. When the six got split up, he was the one, after all, to watch Harry's back when Hermione went down.

Nice drawing! I like Hermione in particular ... I can't explain it, but her form/figure - the way she's turning around, the 'flow' of her robe behind her - just looks very feminine/graceful. Weird, aren't I?

Oh, and I think it's a dead tie as to who gets away first, between Ron and Ginny. :-)

What throws me off, though, are the blank eyes. I know I've mentioned this before, and you've replied, saying something along the lines that these are just 'quick sketches'. Now, I've got to phrase this as just a polite question, because goodness knows I've no artistic talent in me, and I very much enjoy your pictures and the rants scholarly discussions accompanying them, but ... would it take much time to just add some pupils? 'Cause as it is, just empty eye sockets -- *brrrr* -- it gives me the willies.

Absolutely no offence intended, just curious.

As to your words ... well, I think you're just a *trifle* harsh on the Weaselette. I love several of your points - Yes, Harry grabs Hermione (all the more important, given your noting how Jenny had been the student most in jeopardy only seconds earlier, love it!), and I had one big grin on my face when I read your quote of the canon's "sprinting ahead " phrase, excellent.

But are we similarly told anything about Jenny's exodus? I don't particularly remember words like

"Jenny ran away like a mean-spirited b*tch, so long as she got away"

:-)

Just trying to be fair to Jenny, although I do tend to agree with those who want to declare open season on her. And we should remember that all five of the kids were there as friends to Harry, including the Weasleys.

I was thinking just a week ago about all this, and posed a question to a H/G online acquaintance - Just WHY is Ginny in love with Harry?. Hermione would have any number of answers, knowing what she does of him from her friendship of six years - she might love him for his 'saving people' thing, his bravery, the times he's supported her, you name it. In fact she pretty much answered the question with the "you're a great wizard" quote at the end of PS.

Dollars to donuts, though, Jenny still doesn't know the 'real' Harry; does half a summer really give you that much insight to your brother's best friend? After all, once they were back at Hogwarts, she spent all of her time with Dean (despite Harry's attempts to be with her). And that FARCE of a break-up scene seems to read as if she's visualising/fantasising herself in a *role* as the 'tragic girlfriend of the hero' rather than seeing Harry and herself as *real people*.

Anyway. Got carried away, sorry :-)

Jenny Sue will use any combination of insults, attitude, hex (she knows only one), and physical violence to save herself.

What canon supports this? There's Ginny-flying-into-Corner in umbrage as to his harsh words, which makes me tend to despise her (I hate 'jocks' who escalate a war of words to physical violence just because they don't have the smarts to counterattack in kind). There's the bat-bogey hex on the Express. There's her vicious verbal smack-down of Hermione in the common room (so sad that neither Harry nor Hermione's-destined-OBHWF-soulmate came to her rescue). What else comes to mind?

hex (she knows only one)

You've read sbeegee's little drabble on how Jenny Sue is supposed to save the day with that curse, haven't you? Everyone in H/Hr knows about it ... just in case you missed it, it's here.

The grabbing-Hermione-and-running scene you have here is a nice one, all the more because I've never thought of it in that context. I guess I've always skipped on to focus on the Big Scene, when Harry reacts to Hermione being downed by Dolohov. I am SO BLOODY MAD (true to my LJ name) that they're omitting that from the movie. Bloody movie producers ...

Cheers!

Thanks for the detailed responses on the art! And LOL at the racing Weasley comment!

What throws me off, though, are the blank eyes.

LOL! Fine, fine. Because you've been so vocal about this point, I'll edit the post. Just for you, Brad. Just for you. :)

As to your words ... well, I think you're just a *trifle* harsh on the Weaselette.

But are we similarly told anything about Jenny's exodus?

Ah, I suppose I should clarify my comparisons above. In the DoM, it was perfectly acceptable for the kids to run for their lives. They're supposed to run like mad. What stood out in this scene was the fact that Harry reached out to grab Hermione. That was unexpected and unnecessary, but speaks volumes about his priorities.

As for Jenny, I was referring to her actions in HBP, primarily, though her selfishness is notable even in CoS (stealing the diary back, not a word of gratitude to Harry) and GoF (Yule Ball desperation). It wasn't until HBP that Ginny completed her amazing Sue Makeover and shone with selfishness. Off the top of my head, I can remember:
- calling Fleur "Phlegm" (out of female cattiness)
- hexing on the train (because she was irritated)
- tripping Ron on the train platform (out of spite)
- crashing into and injuring Smith during a Quidditch match (because he offended her "sensibilities")
- treating both Michael and Dean poorly (she doesn't give a crap about them)
- the Sectusempra Hermione smackdown (as a means of marking Harry as her territory)
- the Spider-man breakup scene (she's not risking her pretty little neck for Harry--that's his job)

There's really no way to paint Jenny's behavior in any positive light. I see b*tchiness, and I'm calling her on it.

I was thinking just a week ago about all this, and posed a question to a H/G online acquaintance - Just WHY is Ginny in love with Harry?

Did you get an answer to your question? Because I'm dead certain you won't get reasons that can be supported in canon. Rowling gave all the development necessary for a relationship in the books to Harry and Hermione, as you've outlined, and that's why all the ChestMonster/Jenny ship got was meaningless and shallow.

Dollars to donuts, though, Jenny still doesn't know the 'real' Harry; does half a summer really give you that much insight to your brother's best friend?

You're absolutely right. And it doesn't even matter if Jenny maybe "got to know" her brother's best friend over the summer, for the simple fact that this is a series of books. If we didn't read it, then it didn't happen. Otherwise, anyone could assume whatever they wanted happened off-page. Doesn't work that way in literature. :P

What canon supports this?

Ah, I listed all of the scenes you mentioned as part of my response to you above, in addition to a couple more moments in CoS and GoF. I think it's very telling that Jenny doesn't get that much page time in the books overall, but almost all of her scenes show how she prioritizes herself.

You've read sbeegee's little drabble on how Jenny Sue is supposed to save the day with that curse, haven't you?

Heck YES. That's the story to end all stories. Literally. ;)

It's sad if they took that moment out in movie!OotP, since it's quite a standout scene in the book. But at least we've got the hug! :D Best of all, it's all in the books. No creative screenwriting or Photoshopping required! :P

Thanks for the awesome conversation!

The talent of the artists in our fandom never ceases to amaze me. And this is no exception. Your picture is gorgeous! And the first thing I noticed was that Harry was grabbing Hermione. :)

OotP was the first book where I really felt that I was validated in thinking that Harry and Hermione could have feelings for each other. From the DoM, to Grawp, to the essence of Murlap and so many other scenes, the book seemed to really show how much they cared about each other. And then HBP and the delusions that went with it messed everything up. Thanks for posting this, you made me feel a lot better.

OotP was the H/Hr bible, just brimming with scenes that no OBHWFer could deny. HBP actually wouldn't have been nearly so bad if the Interview of Dumb hadn't distracted fandom. Of course, DH may change OotP's status as the H/Hr bible, but we'll see... ;)

Very nice drawings. DUH. You do a great job illustrating this important (IMO) canon scene from OotP.

I'm one of the people who argues until she's blue in the face that Ron DOES NOT fancy Hermione, because his behaviour simply doesn't support it, and this scene is one reason I believe that. Ron takes care of himself without a moment's regard (apparently) for his supposed love interest, while Harry instinctively pulls Hermione to safety with him. Harry simply doesn't think about why he does these things, because he never had time to think or else he's interrupted.

I'm one of the people who argues until she's blue in the face that Ron DOES NOT fancy Hermione, because his behaviour simply doesn't support it, and this scene is one reason I believe that.

And you know what? I totally agree with you and would back you up on this. All the supposed R-->Hr scenes have alternative, and much more likely, interpretations, and so do the so-called Hr-->R scenes. :)

Ron takes care of himself without a moment's regard (apparently) for his supposed love interest, while Harry instinctively pulls Hermione to safety with him. Harry simply doesn't think about why he does these things, because he never had time to think or else he's interrupted.

Harry Potter 101: Theory of Interruptions. This theory is one of the driving points of the mystery in Harry Potter. Any time Harry is about to see/hear/perceive/think about something significant, something else will come along to distract him. I personally think Jenny should be included in the list of such distractions. Rowling even identifies her in the text as a distraction! :)

GUH!! How did I miss this one!! I don't usually come out of lurking, but your art is simply STUNNING and I had to say something.

This is one of my favorite scenes from OoTP and you captured it perfectly!!

I love all your drawings and thank Merlin you're on the right ship and not the easy ship.

Thanks for sharing this with us!! **HUGS**

Thank you for delurking just to comment! I understand how much internal debate is involved in that, because it took me a couple of years of lurking before I finally started posting in fandom. :)

Thanks for the compliments on the art as well. Darn straight I'm proud to be on the right ship, and I'll keep on sailing on it no matter what. :D

Yay! Ever since I discovered this journal I've been checking for a new picture. This one may even rival the one hanging on my wall at the moment. I'm so glad you drew Neville in this picture. I think he's adorable. I think he loves "Jenny" but after HBP I don't think she deserves him.

~Janelle (I really should break down and get a livejournal. Nobody I know in RL ships Harmony.)

Nice to see you again, Janelle! :) And thanks for the comments! I agree that Neville probably likes Ginny (Ginny, not Jenny Sue), but since the fiasco of HBP, I can't bring myself to ship Jenny with anyone. Goodness knows I wouldn't want to inflict Her Royal Sueness upon Neville because an awesome guy like that doesn't deserve that kind of agony.

As for LJ, if you're tracking a bunch of LJs and are interested in participating more in communities, it might be worth getting a free LJ for yourself. That way, you can simply check for updates on your friends list instead of hopping from site to site. :) The decision is yours.

Again, thanks for the commenting!

This is really beautiful! I love it!
It's true - there was no need for Harry to grab her, but he did because he was worried about her. Thank you for reminding me of the goodness that is OotP.

Thank you! I'm glad this reminded you of a time before the Interview of Dumb, when the characters were actually likable! But really, OotP was just full of great H/Hr moments. :D

That's really great! I like the soft lines of shading, and the fabric contours of everyone's robes (it gives it that 'action' feel). I also appreciate the way you draw hands, and the way you've drawn Harry's teeth and tongue (which is a fantastically easy thing to botch, so well done!)

And the on the preview piece... I LOVE the hair! I don't know how long it took you, but you've really got a great technique when it comes to that...

I know... weird (but true) compliments.

Ah! Artistic feedback again! THANK YOU! You noticed little details like Harry's mouth! :D

I generally have no problem with mouths, but I still have some trouble with hands and folds in clothing (since I work without references--urgh--and it shows). I'm working on it, though, and I'm glad you think it's presentable. :)

As for Harry's hair in the preview, I've always loved drawing and coloring hair. I think it's the most fun thing to paint, which explains why the hair was colored in first. Alas, I lost track of time and don't actually know how long I spent doing any one thing, except by the time I looked up from my screen, it was way past my bedtime. Eep! XD

Again, thank you. I greatly appreciate your comments!

Beautiful, beautiful drawing. This was one of my favorite 'small' moments from OotP, so seeing it come to life like this is wonderful. It was a very interesting choice by JKR to separate the group into two squads -- Ginny, Ron, and Luna and Harry, Hermione, and Neville. It's an unusual division and there's so many reasons why she might have chosen to write it that way.

The posing and framing of this picture is very well done. It's very clear exactly what each character is doing and even what they're thinking to an extent. I particularly like what you did with Neville -- his face shows his fear, but he's standing quite bravely and is the only one looking back as if he's considering confronting their pursuers. It's perfect for his role here.

Plus, while Harry seems appropriately oblivious about what he's doing, Hermione appears a little surprised by it even in such an intense moment.

Before HBP, the DoM split was one of the points Harmonians always tried to impress upon OBHWFers. If Hr/R was so important, why did Rowling choose to separate Ron from Hermione? Why did Rowling split the group so that Harry, and not Ron, would see Hermione struck by a curse and fall to his knees, paralyzed with fear? It was a conscious decision for Rowling to write this, because the plot didn't really need the kids to split up, particularly the way they were split up.

Another reason why OotP = H/Hr heaven. It was before the characters' IQ points took a serious dive. :P

Thank you for this comment! You hit the nail right on the head regarding how I felt about Neville as I was drawing this! :D

Plus, while Harry seems appropriately oblivious about what he's doing, Hermione appears a little surprised by it even in such an intense moment.

This is the current state of their relationship, isn't it? Since Harry remains oblivious, Hermione is pleasantly surprised when his subconscious feelings emerge. Other scenes I can remember that reflect this H/Hr dynamic are the "But I don't think you're ugly" OotP conversation and the HBP scene in which Harry reveals to Hermione that he praised her to Slughorn.

Oblivious!Harry and PleasantlySurprised!Hermione. The boy really needs to get a clue. :P

Thank you for the compliments! :)

Although as far as hair goes, in this particular sketch, I rather like Neville's hair. I think it's because I didn't expect the style to come out that way, yet it fit Neville's character. Weird how that works. :D
